On October 31, Battambang became the first Cambodian city to join the UNESCO Creative Cities Network. It is to its gastronomy that Battambang owes this distinction. “Its designation as a creative city for gastronomy is a testament to Battambang’s long-standing efforts and commitment to harnessing culture and creativity for sustainable urban development,” said UNESCO.
Battambang’s inclusion as a UNESCO Creative City in the Gastronomy category not only highlights its exceptional cuisine, but also leverages gastronomy to strengthen local development and global cultural exchange.
Local dishes including Nem Battambang (soft fish), Prahok Battambang, Amok Battambang, Kralan Battambang (sticky rice stuffed in a bamboo tube), Sangvak Battambang, Papaya Salad Battambang, Kantuy Hes Battambang , the Rice Paper Battambang, the Teuk Kroeung Battambang are among the most popular in the city and have attracted UNESCO decision-makers.

On the occasion of World Cities Day, 55 cities, along with Battambang, joined the UNESCO Creative Cities Network (RUCU. With the latest additions, the Network now has 350 cities in over a hundred countries, representing seven creative fields: crafts and popular arts, design, cinema, gastronomy, literature, media arts and music.
